Education, Training and Publications

As a collegial professional organization, Toben provides lifetime education for lawyers. It holds seminars in early summer at outside resort facilities as well as various practical training lectures and seminars at the Bengoshi Kaikan, including seminars on lawyers' ethics, which are provided to members in their fourth, eleventh and twenty-first years of practice.

Of particular significance to Toben's educational program is its Legal Research Group, a voluntary group of member lawyers who study legal practice. The Group is comprised of 15 sub-groups, each focusing on specific legal subjects, such as bankruptcy law, company law, intellectual property law and anti-monopoly law. The Group issues its Law Review periodically. As of 2006, the Group had a total of 1,390 members.

As one of the constituent organizations of the judicial system, Toben assumes responsibility for the practical training of legal trainees who, after passing the national bar examination, are prepared for the legal profession at The Legal Research and Training Institute of the Supreme Court. These trainees are assigned to member lawyers, from whom they receive training in court procedures and other aspects of legal practice, in addition to the training at the distnict courts and the public prosecutors offices over the country.

Toben publishes and distributes to its member lawyers its official monthly journal Libra. This publication contains items concerning current activities and the work of the Association's committees, as well as selected committee reports and articles of interest to its members.
